The following column is the first of a series of five. Question: As a member of a visible minority racial group | en- “counter many comments about my race and customs. I have even felt afraid, at times, of physical vio- lence. 1 also know that there are groups of people wha believe that Canadians should be white and who circulate informetion against other races, I would like to know what I can do to deal with this. A friend of mine was assaulted a while ago, and many of us are afraid. Answer: The threat of violence is something that many of us face every day. Violence is a misuse of power and control. Youth, woncen, elderly peo- ple, gays and lesbians, and people from racial minorities are often targets of violent acts. We are told to practise methods of. prevention, and yet that is hard to do when so many violent acts seem random, with no apparent explanation. it may not seem fair that people at risk should have to adapt to the threat of violence, but until our communities are safe for evervone, it is wise lo use some common sense. Some women have decided, for example, that if they have the choice, it is best to avoid places like dark streets at night. You may !now of similar situations to avoid when possible. One answer to dealing effec- tively with the risks of violence is to increase safety. In the example of dark streets, for instance, one concrete solution is to have bet- ter-lit streets and public places. Public transit companies in some cities have agreed to let peo- ple off closer to their homes if they ask for it. Many workplaces now offer the assistance of secu- rity staff to people who are leav- ing work after dark. These kinds of changes can come about when people like yourself speak out to elected rep- resentatives about safety concerns. Your comments can be made in writing or in person, When doing so, include details of incidents of racial violence. For those who have experienced acts of racial violence, here are some of the important points to remernber, Racial occur in violence can HELP'S AT HAND many different forms. They in- clude: intimidation such as threats; harassment such as in- sults, hate literature and racist graffiti; and physical violence with or without a weapon. If you or someone you know fecls threatened or in danger, dial OLE for emergency assistance. The operator will immediately contact the police for help. Record the details of the inci- dent or have someone help to do so. Include the date, time and place, the circumstances, descrip- tions of the attackers and vehicle, and the name and phone numbers of any witnesses. Pour mix- - ture into ice-cream freezer, and freeze as directed, . Without ice-cream freezer: pour (4) salad ¢ oe mixture into metal pan, Cover with foil. Freeze until firm. Remove from freezer.
