Fourth estate holds reunion

FRIDAY EVENING'S
riotous gathering in the
Centreboard Club of John
Williams’ Pan Pacific Hotel
had to rank right up there
with the very, very best!

This was the Fabulous °50s
reunion of all the editors, colum-
nists, reporters and photographers
who worked at the Veacouver Sun
and Tae Province during the 1950s,
A committee of Jack Lee. Anne
Barting, Chris Crombie, Jennifer
Larson, Tom Butler, Betty

- O'Keefe and Henry Tregillas did
yeoman work to pull this amazing
reunion together.

Familiar names like Allan
Fotheringham, Pierre Berton,

Webster, Clancy Loranger (the
greatest speNer in the warld),
Simma Holt, Vancouver's first
Honorary Fire Chief, Duncan
Holmes, Deni Eagland, our Doug

cess! Alex MacGillivray was the
editor and he was as hard-nosed as
they come, Oh, he was a scary
gramp! Fair but grumpy! Alex is
probably the longest-serving jour-
nist atthe Vaaconver Suan and
he's still here. Even more surpris-
ingly, he looks exactly the same!
Just as dapper and just serious...

Several people were honored
posthumously that night but one
person T don't think received thy
praise that he should have was Jack
Wasserman, Wasserman’s abuut-
town column was the best-read
thing in the paper inthe “50s, He
inade Vancouver an alive, exciting
place to be. Sure he was an arrogant
piin-in- the-butt sometimes but
arent we all? His items and scoops
and tidbits made the Stat the enter-
taining paper that twas, Everyone
read Wasserman...

The 20-page program that was
put together in 48 hours is an
jnvaluuble ireasure-chest of ancient
photos and wonderful stories of
how the warld of the daily newspa-
pers worked at that time, There was
the late Brad Keene in a sports
shot. Drummer Juck Lee in a
striped jacket and bow tie, a war-
helmeted Annis Stukis, a truly
lovely young Princess Elizabeth
being escarted to the Siat's editorial
offices by then- Vancouver Mayor
Fred Hume who had his arm ins
cast. There’s a photo of a very
young and big-eyed Pat Carney, a
handsome Per Danielson, a strik-
ingly attractive Pat Wallace, lean
and lanky Jack MeCaugherty and
asmiling Evelyn (Penny Wise)
Caldwell long before she mobilized
