Starring Elisabeth Shue and Kevin Bacon. HOLLOW Maz intro- duces a credible moral dilemma: what would you do if no one could see you? It’s an interest- ing concept that is all but obliterated by direc- tor Paul Verhoeven’s brand of soft-porn sci- ence. Science fiction has always gone hand-in-glove with pulp trashiness, but I have to won- der if Verhoeven was trying to resurrect his 1995 offering, Showgirls. Scientist Linda McKay (Elisabeth Shue) and top vet- erinarian Sarah (Kim Dickens), are right up there with latest Bond girl Dr. Christmas Jones in giving female scientists the world over a bad name. Straight out of the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine, they strut temptingly about in crop tops, low-cut Tees, tight sweaters and thongs. (Who the hell was in charge of wardrobe?) Wardrobe aside, Shue’s formance is seriously hol- low, She bounces around the lab like Barbie, making her Adventures In Balysitting role look Oscar-worthy. Kevin Bacon fares better as Dr. Sebastian Caine, the genius who willingly becomes a guinea pig in his own invisibil- ity project. Naturally, becoming invisi- ble proves to be the easy part; it’s regaining human form that is difficult. Dr. Caine languish- es in limbo, drunk with power and going crazy from the serum and the isolation of the below-ground lab. He goes from voyeur, to rapist, to mur- derer quicker than you can say “Now you see him, now you don’t.” Bacon is invisible for most of the film, Fis performance, therefore, is essentially one big voice-over, and he rises to the challenge. But the special . ony - Photo Stephen Vaughan KEVIN Bacon stars as scientist Sebastian Caine in Paui Verhoeven’ 's Hollow Man, now showing at Park and Tilford Cineplex. effects is the real star of Hollow Man. The sequences showing the transformation from visibility to invisibility are the highlights of the film. Groundbreaking effects here emphasize the beauty of the body’s interna! structure, giv- ing us a welcome break from Caine’s obsession with the external female form. How many ways can you see an invisible man? Set him on fire; pour water/fire extin- guisher foam/blood on him; blow smoke on him; electro- cute him. These all involve complex and mostly impressive effects. Verhoeven’s impressive sci- fi filmography (Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Rebocop) should bring fans of his work into the theatre, but Hallow Man’s near B-movie qualizy may make it a cult clas- sic.
