The North Shore entrepre- neur has studicd the funeral industry in North America and surmised the future of inter- ment is not cemeteries, but memorial gardens located in unconventional locations throughout the city. & Braun consequently found- Celebration Gardens, a company that promotes the use of interlocking urns instead of traditional burial options. “I visited the cemetery on Capilano Road and found it was in a despicable state,” Braun said. “There were dandelions ‘ind weeds grow- ing, some as tall as 14 inches, grave- stones were out of -Blace. : Tt was a real mess.” “og Braun is upser “that ‘North ‘* “Vancouver City . Y il is unwill- grace.” Braun’s proposal could change how the public bury their dead. His proposal consists of interlocking granite bricks, cach containing an um with the cremated remains of the deceased. The bricks can then be built, similar to Lego blocks, to form any style of monument or structure desired. It doesn’t stop there. Once completely built, Braun said the whole structure is mobile and can be moved at anytime. “There are certain elements thar earmark a world class city,” Braun said. “The archi- tecture of the city, the ingenu- Columdaria (units to hold urs) before we heard from Mr. Braun,” Granger said. “We've explained to him we're undertaking this project ... one of the reasons we're not inter- ested in his project is because it’s so big.” Granger criticized Braun’s proposal for being inaccessible. “People like to go to the cemetery or memorial and visit their loved ones,” he contin- ued. “The product Mr. Braun has proposed builds itself like an apartment building with every layer added on ... it’s not accessible.” An estimated 75% of B.C. residents are cremated after death. Braun said that's simply too expensive. “For $1,500 you can have a space in the niche wall, an urn, ¢ cremation, and your space will be properly maintained for ’ the duration of time that urn, is there,” he said. “Purchasing an urn can cua anywhere $50 to $3,000 alone. But for $1,500 we'll cover the com- plete package.” Granger said he found Braun’s suggestion of profiting from a memorial garden unset- tling. “I had difficulty 4s accept- ing his proposal of che city making up to $1 million off of sae niersier or ian legal description us this,” Granger said. “The North Vancouver cemeteries are a public service not a prof- it centre. We charge fees we think are reasonable, but we're certainly not turning a profit.” Braun, who unsuccessfully pitched a similar proposal to the San Diego Padres as they were considering financing for their new ballpark, said he'll fight North Vancouver City council on this issuc. “I love confrontation and I will go to city council regard- ing the state of this cemetery,” he fumed. “It! s simple laziness on their part.” Braun will appear before city council on October 5.
