Derrell Bickel has been cutting hair in che Deep Cove rocation for 35 years. Last nonth he got the news that his lease was being terminat- ed. Following an outpouring ef support from the surround- ing community, the mall's + management company, Anthem Properties, reversed its initial decision and entered into negotiations with Bickel. In the meantime, the bar- ber’s neighbor, Carousel Cleaners, also got the boot. Reaction from the drvcleaner was fiery. “They just shafted me out,” said Carousel owner Barb Houston, who has owned the store for about two years and was planning on DERRELL Bickel, owner of the Dollarton Barber Shop, has called it a day. selling it. Houston contacted =a lawyer, but like her hair-cut- ting counterpart, she was also legally powerless to do any- thing abour the eviction. Anthem evicted Houston because they had leased the barber space to another drycleaner. However, by fast Wednesday, things started to look up for both tenants. However, Bickel didn’t get a copy of the final document until fast Saturday, On Sunday he abruptly packed up his stuff and lefr. “We thought we had a deal with Derrell and were quite surprised when he moved out anyway,” said Anthem vice president James Speakman. “1 don’t know what the lesson is here. [ think everyone’s just disappointed with the way it has turned out.” Bickel’s take on the situa- tion is quite different. He said he left because the final lease he received did not contain the items he thought: were agreed upon. “By the time they came around I had already sold a barber chair and a sink,” said Bickel. “They just infuriate me.” Houston has been caught op her own rollercoaster nde of changing scenarios. She started negotiating a lease with Anthem late last year.
