ANITA Sleeman seems
imminently qualified to
speak on the status of
Canadian women composers.

She‘ll do just that at an interna-
tional symposium on women in
music in Italy next month.

The 66-year-old Vancouver resi-
dent has been penning musical com-
positions since she was 14. It wasn’t
until she was 37, however, that she

began her career in carnest.

Sleeman waited till her youngest
of six children was well out of diapers
before pursuing a Bachelor of Music
degree at UBC.

A master’s degree, also from
UBC, followed and, stil! later, a doc-
toral degree from the University of
Southern California.

Sleeman’s compositions should
be familiar te North Shore music
lovers.

The North Vancouver-based
Galiano Trio has commissioned sev-
eral pieces. The West Vancouver

Alumni Band and Pro Nova String
Quartet have also performed her
works. In the °70s, she taught with
Capilano College’s music depart-
ment.

The past five vears, she’s con-
ducted the Ambleside Orchestra at
its many performances in the com-
munity, including most recently the
Harmony Arts Festival.

Donne in Musica symposium in
Fiuggi, Italy, this Sept. 8 to 14, shell
be representing the Association of
Women Composers, an 80-member
national organization of composers,

porters. ate
Though her music is colored by
the sounds of Spain and Russia,
which reflect her ethnic background,
this will be her first trip to Europe.
Sleeman’s looking forward to it.
She’s worked her travel itinerary
to include three days of sight-seeing
in Rome. She won’t be packing her
French horn. Its size makes it
“rather impractical” to tote around,
she says.
But she will be packing her
baton, since she may be called on to
do some impromptu conducting.
