Bear siories upset visitor Dear Editor: Tam alone here? Though I just began reading the North Shore News a few months ago, I have found a disproportionateiy —_targe number of — seemingly remorseless articles concern- ing the treatment and man- agement of ‘wildlife in the area, I hope this is a reflec- ‘tion of the paper and not actual practice. As a student from Alberta attending uni- versity here i expected better from a community that is presumed to greatly appreci- ate its wildlife. _ The pathetic story of the hunter mauled by the grizzly bear was just one of many that scemed to sympathize with the aggressive antago- nist. Sorry, I know this niay sotnd harsh bur the bear was at home and the hunter out looking for what he .got! Even in redneck Alberta hunters have been outcast. But the most recent arti- cle that prompted me to write this letter was about the mother and baby bear that were shot to death because of some aiobs chit could aut keep their yard clean, This is not an attack against the conservation offi- cers who were forced to put them down as they were only doing their difficult job. It’s a plea to this paper and community to start showing some compassion — and responsibility in dealing with the wildlife in the area, And by the way, those slobs who gor the bears killed should have to pay for the conservation officers’ time and donate some of their own time to the effort of balancing the fragile envi- ronment these bears are forced to live in. Davis was instrumental in get- ting the idea and planning of the golf course off the ground, Ac the opening cere- meny some people were Jett with the impression that North Vancouver District Hall was taking the full credit for the creation of the golf course when in fact the man, Don Davis, should be given the credit.
