To prevent damage you can plant
your crop under a “Remay” fabric
row cover to keep the fly out. Late
planting (after mid-May) will aiso
reduce or avoid the first generation
of flies.

Some gardeners-have had fair
success using a 20 X 20cm (8 X 8
inch) square of tar paper fitted tight-
ly around the base of the’plant to
deter the fly from laying eggs. You
might like to try adding ‘Tangle
foot’ to the paper to catch the fly if
she does land to lay eggs.

If the plants become infested
with root maggots the only remedy
is to drench the.ground around the
root with Diazinon at the recom-
mended rates every seven to 10 days
while the plants are young. Old or
dead plants that are infected should
be destroyed to prevent a repeat
infestation.
