ON THE topographical map of
fine dining, Lynn Valley has
remained pretty much true to its
name: no peaks but a lot of val-
ley.

It is a frontier hamlet of fast-food
diners, burger joints and assorted
low-ceiling affairs — lots of charac-
ter, but little else.

Things, however, are beginning
to change in this land of lumbesjack
shirts and Smiling Crabs legends.

ing is high on the North Shore, and it
is reaching formerly inaccessible

acquired its own Starbucks coffee
house, and now has acquired perhaps
its first really interesting restaurant.

Pierre Poulin, French-Canadian
proprietor and head cook of the leg-
endary Lynn Canyon Park conces-
sion stand, opened Pepirto Sept. 21
in the Ross Road location that previ-
ously housed Maza Gina's pizza
and lasagna house.

toria-styie interior decor courtesy of
Yvan Cuertier: braids of garlic and

chili peppers strung from the ceiling; —

candle light and wine; terracotta and
deep green.

It also features the culinary talents

of Pierre’s brother and Pepino head
chef, Danie! Poulin, and a menu of
Italian speciulties and assorted sur-
prises from around the
Mediterranean and the Pacific Rim.
There is nothing much over $10
at Pepino — Valley folk would-not
countenance any snobbish high-flyer
with inflated prices north of the -
Upper Levels — and the selection is
