* SN Le IME Cinemas) James Urbanski (Willis) is busy leaving his mark in life — just ask his wife, Joyce (Glenne ttead- ly). In fact, his latest marks are now turning a Geep shaae of pur- ple on her arms. As his abuse in- creases, so do her comments about killing him. Her childhood friend, Cynthia Kellog (Demi Moore), has heard the tough talk for years and assumnes they are just the usual mutterings. Sure, she knows jim- my is a swine. His idea of paren- ting is to diaper his baby with adult-size utiderwear and duct tape. And when he isn’t snorting the family allowance up his nose, he’s trying to score with her. Stil, Cynthia doesn’t take the murder talk seriously — even after witnessing Joyce mix rat poison in with his sugar. {It was just 2 joke. So, who's laughing? Not James’ suspicious relatives. Not Arthur, Cynthia’s selfishly angry husband. And certainly not Naturalist hosis cruise RUN AWAY to sea for the day. Tim Bell FILM REVIEW the two lifelong friends who dumped the bleeding corpse. About the only one having any fun is Det. john Woods (Harvey Keitel}, punching away at Cyn- thia’s statement while consuming powdered denuts and coffee. But the fun is really for the au- dience, treated to a taut script, gritty performances and caustic wit. Demi Moore, so mediocre in Ghost, must have been saving her talent for this role (although she does overuse the single, perfect tear trick). Her real-life husband Willis makes a great lout, but somehow (perhaps because he is Bruce Willis) he’s a lout with appeal. But it’s Headly with the fullest role — crackling street smarts, vulgar humor and an intensity that gets downright scary when he starts to question her friend’s loyalty. Thanks to the script and some quirky touches by director Alan Rudolph, Mortal Thoughts is a solid thriller, refreshingly more concerned with thought than morality. Reflections of Murder *** (CBS/Fox Home Video) Unrated Mousey wife Joan Hackett and domineering mistress Tuesday Weld conspire to murder their brutal mate (Sam Waterston) in this made-for-TV replica of the French classic Diabolique. Starting slowly, the mystery set in a gloomy boys’ school builds to a nerve- wracking finale as the perfect murder proves anything but. The gothic atmosphere plays better in the black and white orig- inal, but the color remake com- pensates with a superb Joan Hackett performance.
