Kanda Bongo Man — Kwassa Kwassa, Hannibal Records 1989 Zairean soukous (the term derived from the French secouer ~ to shake) is one of the most compelling grooves to come out of Africa over the past several years. Paris-based Kanda Bongo Man moves the intricate uptempo rhythm along with a buttery tenor voice and the lithe-fingered sup- port of crack lead guitarist Diblo and Ringo Star on twin lead guitar. A percussive Ringo, Ringo Yaya Pezo, nails down the double-time beat to keep the bubbling bright affair from cork-screwing off into the ozone. Quoi ca? Kwassa kwassa! Depeche Mode — Violator, Sire Records 1990 Ever the elegant synth sophisti- cats, the Modes have, nine years following hit number one (Oream- ing Of Me}, matured into praiseworthy pop survivors. They've hit upon a mesmerizing combination of a Smiths-like vocal MICHAEL ' BECKER record review delivery and a tentative lyrical perspective constructed around a pulsating electronic background. The electro-funky Personal Jesus, the group’s first gold-selling single stateside, and Clean, a paean chronicling the spiritual equivalent of a purgative colonic flush, stand out as the more obvious con- tenders for heavy rotation on the alternative music dance charts. With Violator, Depeche Mode manage the rare trick of cobbling together a string of accessible tunes while maintaining a cre- atively fruitful tension between mood-laden style and substance. Good ’O!
