North Star School gets new name

NORTH STAR Elementary School has been renamed Ecole
Andre Piolat, the North Vancouver School Board decided

Tuesday.

Parents present broke into ap-
plause when trustees voted unani-
mously to rename the school.

North Star, which is located on
West Kings Road in North Van-
couver, has housed the school
district's Programme Cadre de
Francais since 1987 and presently
has an enrolment of 96 pupils.

The school’s renaming results
from a year-long campaign by the
parent’s committee, who had pro-
posed several names of prominent
French-Canadians to the board.

Andre Piolat, a citizenship judge
who died in 1987, founded B.C.’s

Piolat grew up is an English-
speaking part of Saskatchewan be-
fore embarking o) a quarter cen-
tury of varied travels and careers
that included a stint with the
French Foreign Legion in Algeria
and action in the Second World
War as a svidier in the Royal Ca-
nadian Aniillery. He settled in
Vancouver iu 1955.

France for his contribution to
