& - Friday, Iuly 28, 1929 - North Syore News nee Collins’ retirerment ‘a black day in July’ Dear Editor: With great regret I hear Doug Collins is hanging up his pen. He has kept up the fight against those unnerving insensitive politicians. Truly the last bastion of common sense in this country of apathy. When I see on TV or read in the papers the continual pandering to Quebec, the “‘special status’ of Meech Lake, revcrse discrimina- tion, government ties with com- munist countries, then sancticns against South Africa, the sell-out to pressure groups, Canada becoming a haven for foreign q, Doug ‘tells a z= = a ia it like it is’ Dear Editor: I’m sorry to ‘see Doug Collins retire, but I believe as he s2id in his last column of Sunday, July 2: the time had come and that the years with the News had been the best (and most productive I might add), for through your medium freedom of speech lives up to just that. What Doug is to be greatly ad- mired for is his ability to tell it like it is; that he was distinguished for his guts to stick his neck out ageinst our immigration system which for 20 years has been designed to hold no regards for our own culture and to continually remind us of the muiticult style democracy that is controlling us. Another fine example of Doug Collins’ concerns and frustrations over the traditional Canadian public being ignored on this social- ly critical issue is that Chuck Cook, our North Ven MF has yet to report to Parliament as to the results of his immigration debate of March 26, 1988 in which the government screly lost to none other than Doug. And it is rare any MF holds a public debate especially during a non-election period, Again, I agree with Ron Hun- tington, the former MP for Capilano-Howe Sound, that the country is run by pressure groups. I only wish that traditional Canada would be a little more ‘patriotic’ like Doug, for according to my dictionary this means: the love of one’s own country and upholding it’s interests. And, surely now, it is not in the interests of most Cana- dians to become another Hong Kong or India, which is what will happen. + I’m sure most who avidly read Doug Collins wish him a long and enjoyable retirement well deserved. WHILE the North Shore News apolo- Bizes for not being able to print all of our teaders’ letters regarding Doug Collins’ tetirement, the letters published in to- day’s paper on pages 7, 8 and 9 are a representative sampling. While Doug was both enthusiastically applauded and vehemently slammed for his opinions expressed in his Get This Straight column published three times a week in the News, and while letters to the editor always equatly represented his critics and supporters, all of the letters sent in on Doug’s retirement — except for one — expressed appreciation for his conviction in presenting what hasn't always been the popular perspective. And while readers said they often didn’t agree with what Doug had to say, they were adamant he have the right to say it. In Sundisy’s issuc, the News will feature a fina! ‘ribute to Doug Collins by publishing a selection of excerpts from his columns.- MOUNT SEYMOUR UNITED ] CHURCH 1200 Parkgate Ave., North Van xt 929-1326 10:00 am Worship Nursery Provided SEYMOUR COMMUNITY Presbyterian Church at Ron Andrew Community Centre just off Seymour Parkway 10 a.m. Worship & Church Schoot Nursery Provided Rev.
