Seniors housing gets NVD support NO OBJECTIONS were raised at a North Vancouver District public hearing into a 64-unit seniors housing project proposed for Bridgman Avenuc and 16th Strect. A development permit for the project, which is beiug sponsored by the Capilano Lions Housing Society, will be presented for ap- proval at a future regular mecting of council. ‘ The housing project will be three stories in height, built in a “Vv” formation, with the main access to the site coming from Bridgman Avenue. District staff will be preparing a report. containing details on the landscaping and design of the pro- ject, which will be ready for the Feb. 8-mecting of council. The provincial government has already made funding available to the. Lions Society for the project, but there is some concern that the funding could be withdrawn if the district is not making progress on the building. Ald. Joan Gadsby expressed concern that the provincial gov- ernment pushes municipalities to build seniors projects too quickly. ‘In my mind, some of the process seems to usurp local ccuncil’s authority in the matter...! do think that this council has the right to expect a little bit more time to analyse the overall elements.”’ Gadsby indicated that the pro- vince seemed to be saying ‘If you don't do it now, you might never get it (funding).”’ At an earlicr meeting of district council, Bruce Delaney, president of the Norgate Park Community Association, expressed support for the seniors project. Delaney did express the hope, however, that a precedent not be established for future high-density rezonings for the area. All members of council have ex- pressed support for the seniors housing because of the need to provide housing for an ‘“‘aging" population, and because the development can provide a buffer between a low-density residential community to the south of the project and a high-density com- mercial area to the north of the site. Ground level parking will be provided for the site with half the spaces being undercover, The building will be a wood frame construction, but there will be fireproof walls between all units in the project.
