NORTH SHORE WINTER CLUB 25 - Sunday, January 17, 1988 - North Shore News itself competing with the bigger schools but, happily, with greater results. Fresh from their top-placing in last weekend's high-calibre Nor- thwest Tournament — hosted an- nually by Windsor and Carson Graham — the Dukes extended their overall season won-lost re- cord to 15-2 heading into this weckend's tough Steveston Packers’ Tournament. Windsor’s lineup includes 6°3" Grade 10 forward Megan Magee who was a B.C. ‘*A" tourney first all-star Jast year after being brought up from the junior team at the end of the season. As the most valuable player in the recent Northwest Tournament, she scored 47 points and grabbed 27 rebounds — both school re- cords — in a 78-66 semi-final win over Victoria's Lambrick Park. Windsor defeated Kelvin of Win- nipeg 78-66 and Nanaimo in the final 71-59. Point guard Marie Vecsey is another key player. A second all- star in last year's B.C. tournament and a member of the provincial under 7 select team, she is in Grade i2. Leanne Isaac, a 6'°1"' Grade 11 farward is the team’s most im- proved player; and forward Dianne Osborne and guards Tanys Haladner, Michelle Blanchard, Tiffany Chester, Tracy Crawford and Andrea Brauner arc all fine players. Carson Graham Eagles, Wind- sor’s biggest rival over the years; and the revitalized Hillside High- wrymen who are playing their last year as a senior school, will be fighting for the other North Shore “A™ spot. The Eagles are coached by Sy far |e " y brakes ukes gun for top spot seven-year veteran Ray Marshall and Jim Martin and, like Windsor, have a young team that has had more than their share of injuries and illness. Point guard Victoria Cook and forward Janet Smitheringale are both Grade 12s but other major contributors such as guard Leila Hopkin, posts Tasha Thorpe and Penny Lazarakis are in Grade J1 as are Catherine Scarlett and An- drea Wiebe, who have been side- lined off and on with leg and knee injuries. Carson Graham's league record is 6-1. Hillside, under first-year senior coach Randy Storey, has a 5-3 league record based on the play of Grade 11 guards Lynn Forward and Allison Snelgrove, who moved here this year from Oakville, Ont.; and Grade 12 forwards Erin Dixon and Sandra Madill. Argyle Pipers. with Cheryl Funk coaching for the first: year and Handsworth Royals — under Jack Tasaka and Joe Dang who are coaching senior girls for the first time after many years with boys’ teams at various age divisions — are the North Shore's other AA" schools. The Pipers rely on $°10°' for- ward Lynn Alexander and guard Kellle Reeves, both in Grade 12. They are backed up by Yvonne Loewen, Terean Hilton and Jea- nifer Adair, also graduating this year; and Grade IIs Teresa Buckoll, Susan Chalmers and Angle Slee.
