Local firefighters have “icked off their annual community awareness blitz with demonstra- tions, displays, a school hose drill competition guest [ectures to school chiluren and a com- munity-wide fire escape program. The North Vancouver District Fire Department has a planned agenda including fire company visits to local kindergartens, a mall display, a fire safety house display and participation in the Oct. 9 Plan To Get Out Alive com- munity-wide fire escape program. FIRE SAFETY Starting today and running through to Sunday, firefighters will be on hand at a fire display at Lynn Valley Centre mall. The display will focus on fire preven- tion and fire safety as well as look at the functions of the firefighters News will participate in race — SIX NORTH Shore News staffers will be hauling buckets of water during a race Oct. 6 for the third annual bucket brigade event during Fire Prevention Week. During the timed race, team members are required to fill a 45- gallon drum with = water using one-galion canvas buckets. Two icams will compete at a time, and the fastest team overall will be declared the winner for one par- ticular category. Designed to increase awareness of Fire: Prevention Week, the bucket brigade includes team members from the media, restuarants, hotels, community groups, and fire and police staff. Last year, the News team cap- tured a first place spot in the media category. Bucket brigade races begin at noon Oct. 6 at the Robson Square Media Centre. The drill is sponsored by McDonald’s and local fire departments. ESCAPE PLAN Area residents will have the op- portunity to develop and practise a home fire escape plan. Fire com- panies on duty during the day will canvass area residents to encourage citizen participation. Fire drill worksheets are available at local fire halls and McDonald’s restaurants. The West Van department will be holding a public demonstration 12:30 to 2 p.m., Oct. 4 at the MacDonald’s restaurant located at 1425 Marine Drive in West Van- couver to profile the Plan To Get Out Alive home fire drill. Firefighters will meet the public and answer questions. The demonstration features a 1929 LaFrance antique truck as well as a ladder truck. North Vancouver City Fire prevention week Department has a full agenda planned for the week. To foliow up on fire safety lec- tures offered this week to local schools, the fire department will visit schools in the coming week with truck demonstrations. DEMONSTRATION The truck demonstration in- cludes a portable fire extinguisher demonstration, a smoking house, a cathedral truck ladder raise, a rope slide and a hose drill competition.
