We are fortunate not to have a high incidence of violent crime on the North Shore but let us not be under the delusion that any area is crime-free. We must be realistic and face facts. Every crime committed results in one or more unfortunate, direct victims. Citizens should be reminded that criminal offences are crimes against society — that’s all of us. Should we not be aware of crimes committed and concern- ed for those among us who have been directly affected? Safety within a community is very much dependent upon citizen participation in crime prevention and good community, police rela- tions. Who is going to get involved in crime prevention programs if he lives with the myth that crime doesn’t exist? Paranoia is dangerous and damaging; apathy invites crime.
