TRUCK BRAKE ALERT
ISSUED BY ICBC

THE INSURANCE Corporation
of B.C. is asking owners of
trucks and commercial vehicles to
check for improperly aligned spr-

} ing brake units which can impair
efficiency in the main braking
system as well as the parking/
emergency systems.

A message has gone out to the
owners of 600 commercial fleets
plus 14,000 small companies and
individuals who operate heavy
equipment, alerting them to the
hazard and outlining procedures
for checking their vehicles’ brak-
ing systems. The oly solation to
the situation is ‘to replace the
units showing misaligament. |

In addition to the vehicle op-

4 erators atready contacted, the

warning also applies to as many
as 10.000 unlicensed and
unregistered vehicles in use at
remote off-road locations such as
logging and mining sites. New
vehicles at dealerships may also
be affected.

The misalignment, which can
accelerate brake wear and reduce
braking efficiency by up to 50 per

- cent, is found in self-centering

double diaphragm spring brakes.
ICBC estimates that this type of
unit is installed iu 80 per cent of
the 100,000 heavy vehicles it in-
sures. .

THE DAY you take delivery of your new car is abways a special one.

Unfortunately, many people temporarily blinded by ‘tnew car fever’?
forget to look the car over before driving it home.

Many misunderstandings could be avoided, according to automotive
specialists at General Motors, if the new car buyer spent a few minutes
examining his or her new car and asking any questions before driving off
the lot.

Here are some helpful tips for taking delivery of your new car:

® Avoid picking up your car in the evening if possible. [t's much easier
to give acar a thorough inspection in the daylight.

© Check all the options you ordered by comparing the window sticker,
the bill of sale and the vehicle itself. {t's easier to correct the problem
then, rather than months later.

e Cars can sometimes be damaged by accidemt, theft or vandalism
while in transit to the dealership. While most transit damage will be spot-
ted and corrected by the dealer before you pick up the car, it’s a good
idea to carefully inspect the paint, trim and body. Make sure all doors,
hood and trunk lid line up properly and open and close easily.

* Check the car’s interior to be sure that upholstery and trim all fit
correctly. While you’re sitting in the car, get out the owner’s manual and
look it over for the placement and function of all knobs and buttons. Be
sure to read the manual cover to cover once at home, noting all warranty
information and maintenance schedules.
