The Asia-Pacific Founda-
tion was the brainchild of
John Brook, who originally
took the idea to the former
Liberal government. Core
funding of $1 million will be
provided by the federal gov-
ernment, with contributions
also expected from par-
ticipating provinces. The
purpose of the Foundation is
to expand ties with Pacific
countries.

The rookie MP says she

has had a lifelong interest in

the Far East, part of which
was influenced by her late
father’s activities as the
founder of the Canad2-
Japan Society.

Besides attending the of-
ficiat functions pianned for
Clark, Collins says she had
the opportunity to visit the
Japanese Parliament, - the
Diet, observing how the
Japanese political system
works, and-also to meet with
two high profile Japanese
women — the Pariiamentary
vice-minister for foreign. af-*
fairs and a senior newspaper |
editor. — with. whom she -
discussed Japanese v women’ S:
issues. :
