Partners Pat Koropat- nick and John Whyte will be Operating Vancouver Stu- dent General Contracting (VSGC) for a third straight summer, but this year they will have a more profes- sional look. A $2,000 loan from the Royal Bank, the instituuon funding the program, has enabled Koropatnick and Whyte to purchase their own truck, as well as the light equipment and tools neces- sary for their business. The registered (and insured) company boasts reliable workmanship on interior/exterior painting, yardwork and moving. And yes, they even do windows. VSGC evolved from a summer experience Koropatnick had in Calgary a few years ago. He was in- spired to start his own business after witnessing the relative success of his By JOANNE MacDONALD brother’s friend, the opera- tor of a thriving painting business. He returned to Vancouver, broached the idea to Whyte and another friend (no longer a principal in the company) and VSGC was born. Among the first applicants in B.C. to receive a loan under the new venture capi- tal program, the partners say they are still in the early stages of their 1984 adver- tising drive, having distributed only about 100 of their 3000 flyers. To date, they have com- pleted jobs in the British Properties, Cedardale and other areas of the North Shore. Currently, the young men say they are basically doing yard work and some painting — depending on the weather. When we knock on _ their doors to see if they need any regulations, the young men must pay back the $2,000 loan by September 30, 1984. Their target is to make enough of a profit to cover their combined university costs (tuition and books) of $4500.
