At a time when budget cut- backs are causing concern over the quality of education, members of the North Shore business community are spending time in high schoo] classrooms as part of Junior Achievement’s exciting new program, Project Business. Project Business means volunteer business people, acting as consultants to class- room teachers, sharing first- hand experiences with high school students to increase their awareness of the role business plays in their daily lives. The Project Business consultant will lead one class per week for 14 weeks, cover- ing topics such as the Cana- dian economy, money and banking, the market system, and careers. Each topic is covered in three phases — a dialogue with the students; activities; and exploration of possible careers. I have had the students form companies, create advertising campaigns, run a stock exchange, inter- view for jobs and sometimes just discuss day-to-day business items such as whether $5 was a fair price for a towel to wave at a Canuck hockey game. ‘‘Project Business is fun. It’s fun when a group of tough guys are trying to con- vince the class that their plans to open lemonade stands in the desert with neon signs on the top of pyramids will make money. It’s fun wat- ching a student trying to con- vince another student that the only reason he turned down his job application was because his application form was messy. It’s fun watching students get swept up by the fever of a stock market. for info call 251-21 57 Ray O
