sunday news Editor: ANDY FRASER May 25, 1980 Captures gold in floor exercises Anita Botnen, 14, of the Flicka Gym Club in North Vancouver made her mark into the junior national team with a fifth all-around at the Canadian National Champion- ships last week in Alma, Quebec. Since the start of her com- petition in 1978 at nationals she has progressed steadily upward both in placing and scores. She finished with an overall score of 68.05. Botnen was also awarded the Choreography award for her floor exercise routine as she became the Junior champion in that event with a score of 17.575. After finals she finished sixth on the uneven bars with 16.75. For the last two. years Botnen has won the provincial Jumor uthe along™ with the Western Canadian tile. Kelsall who was the “77° champion lost the utle to Elfi Schlegel of Toronto the following year, and was out of competition last year because of a mayor knee operation She finished well in the lead with an all-around score of 73.80, the second place going to Ellen Steward of Ontano with 7185 — Elfi Schlegel was not in the competion because of a back injury Monica Goermann last year's champion from Winnipeg fimshed a disappointing ore track meet in pict fourth place. Kelsall won three out of the four events. She cap- tured titles on the vault with a score of 18.45, uneven bars 18.70 and floor exercise with 18.60, and came second on beam with 18.05. She was given the Senior choreography awards for both her balance beam and foor exercise optional routines Both Botnen’s and Kelsall’s routines were taught by members of the Mulvihill family from Eugene, Oregon. Philip Delesalle, 21 from Port Alberni won the Senior men's title for the fifth consecutive year.
