A tactic of fast resort if vou: have no logical argument. She says she is proud of the type of democracy that we have here in Canada. Fair enough. I'm not, because we do not have democracy in Canada The original colonial Dominion of Canada still exists. With a name change and a transfer of absolute power from Olde England to Ottawa it became palatable to some, like Ms. Reili. At best, Canada is a benev- olent dictatorship dressed up in “elections” at irregular inter- vals to determine which poiiti- cal party will wield that absolute power. That benevo- lence is being replaced by greed and personal agendas. Costly and time consuming referen- dunt processes, she says. Costs are minuscule com- pared with the benefit of elimi- nating the blatant waste, patronage and dishonesty prevalent under the current sys- tem, Time is consumed because in a democracy the citizen must accept responsibility for making sure those elected are doing what they promised to do when they san for office. Recall and referendum are the tools with which voters enforce integgity of office at all levels of government. She prefers that we elect representatives to do a job for us trusting to their conscience. In fact, these representatives work for the polidcal party, not the elector. Not one of Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s Liberal MPs nor the B.C. “pre- mier of the day” NDP MLAs dares vote against the party. To do so would result in immediate and severe punish- ment by the leader. The media have assumed responsibility for exposing corruption in our pre- sent political system because few of those elected have the conscience to do so themselves, MP White regularly names these charlatans in his adverto- rials. Knowing that under the present. system of government nothing can be done to curb them must make him angry. It does me, A democracy requires vigi- lant participating citizens with the power to make government serve them, which takes time and effort. Kneeling and begging for favour from our current rulers is certainly more convenient than having to think and act. Many prefer the latter, Hopefully, most prefer the for- mer.
