THIS girl is a hoot. When required, Dorothy (Dor) Lyle, a reserved ex- nurse and retired school secre- tary, can transform herself into a vivacious comedienne. She's done her share of obraining gopher tails (via drowning) which sold for five cents apiece during, the tough Depression years, bartled a Jengthy illness and anxiously awaited her husband's return from overseas. . Dot believes in handling, as best one can, whatever lite dishes out. It was when an unknown infant was “dumped” upon her that Dot asked, “Why mec?” This friend- Iv, conscientious woman with the big heart was already jug- gling a busy life, raising a fami- ly of her own and doing vol- unteer work, One of six children, Dot spent the first seven years in her birthplace of Waskada, Manitoba. Her family moved to Lyleton where her father rook over the general stere. Chuckling, Dot remem- bers: “The local auto dealer had a one-eyed Shetland pony z.amed Beauty which we were allowed to ride. When tired of having someone on her back, Beauty would go under a fence and ‘wham’ — off would go the kid.” Dot recalls playing hockey on the main road. “We would wrap catalogues around our ankles s shin pads and use frozen road cookies (horse droppings) for pucks — don’t laugh, we really did this,” grins Dot. Her first job was at the Department of Public Health in Winnipeg, but she soon joined the staff at the Canadian Wheat Board. During Christmas of °43 she married her longtime friend (since second grade) Pat, a pilot instructor in the RCAF. Dot quit her job and moved to Goderich, Ontario where Pat was stationed. After Pat's discharge from the Armed Forces, the Lyles moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba, bought a house and stayed three years. Here, in 1947, Dot’s first son was born. The Lyles arrived at New Westminster in °48 and Pat joined the sales staff of Morrow Fuel Oil. They moved to the North Shore in 1950 and their second son was born. By this time the baby had won their hearts, so Dor and Par legaily adopted the child and raised all three chil- dren with the same loving care that Dot herself felt privileged to have received. Dot smiles: “We are so lucky to have such a wonder- ful, attentive family.” Dor decided in 59 to resume her secretarial career, so accepted part-time work with nwo schools, Seymour Heights and Burrardview. After owo years, she was trans- ferred to Eastview School where she remained until she retired 18 years later. At her retirement party, each child did something tor her — made a drawing, sang a song, wrote a poem. “It was very touching. | will never for- get that day,” smiles Dot. As active members of the North Shore Winter Club since its beginning, Dot and Par participated in the curling and social events. Laughing, Dot remembers: “Those were really fin times.” As were weekends, for 20 years, When she and Pat would “hide away” at the foot of Mt. Baker in their 40-foot trailer. In April 1993 they cele- brated their 50th wedding anniversary, sold their home and moved into a condo. Then on March 12, 1994, Dot lost her lifetime compan- ion and devuted husband after a five-month battle with lung cancer, Nowadays, Dot enjoys curling, golf, bridge and “keep fit” classes. She is a volunteer with Meals On Wheels and at her church. She occasionally bets on the pacers at Fraser Downs and partakes of the track’s superb smorgasbord. And “Nana” lovingly knits and crochets things for her family of five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Those of us whose lives she has touched are richer for hav- ing had the privilege of knaw- ing this gentle lady who has courageously and composedly deale with whatever life con- fronted her. Dor turns 79 on March 4.
