Kecan stimulate or soothe, make us feel happy or irritated, In nature it cun signal icy cold or red hot, and in the animal world it can repel ene- mies or attract friends. Marketers use color to make products look appeal- ing, expensive. or cheap. Artists use it to express feelings. and composers can conjure up images of calor with music. We often choose our wardrobe to convey a messuge: navy blue and charcoal grey to appear sincere and trustworthy: yellow and orange to express happiness. We have a tendency to fret over color: occasionally we even fight over its choice and who gets to inake it. The following guide to color sym- bolism won't make color choice eas- ier, but it may explain aversion to some colors, and attraction to others. RED Red is the mast stimulating and arousing of all colors, It makes the hear beat faster and interiors feel warner. Red is preferred by those who love power, are strong-willed and self-confident, Bright red appears daring, exciting and dynam- ic. Burgundy (a mixture of red and black) is associated with words like luxury, refinement, elegance. In many countries red symbolizes masculinity; in South America it has connotations of blasphemy and anger. BLUE Blue is serene. cool and calming andi ociated with sky and water, ‘ft inspires confidence and conjures images of faith. devotion, reliability, prestize and serenity. Not all blues t itre wanquil, just as not al) “blue- lovers” are faithful. Much depends on the intensity and value of the hue. Blue with a red undertone takes on some of the excitement of red: with more red added it turns purple. a color that is associated with an expression of rage. In the Middle East and among some native Indians, blue is consid- ered a protective color. In the Mediterranean doors are, painted blue to keep evil spirits away. YELLOW | Yeliow is the most luminous of colors. People who love yellow are thought to be intelligent, original and innovative.
