NATIVE LITERACY advocate and editor Joel Maki was in town last month to take part in the opening events of the new Vancouver Public Library and to promote Steal My Rage, the anthology of poetry and prose he edited for Douglas & McIntyre ($16.95). Steal My Rage features 34 First Nations writers working in a wide riters nee variety of styles, both fiction and non- fiction, and dealing with subjects such as personal’ and- community identity, traditional cultural values and the stresses of contemporary urban life. Like several other recent antholo- gies. Steal My Rage demonstrates that there is a largely untapped pool of First Nations: writers who are working to adapt traditional oral story-telling techniques ‘to written ‘work in uniquely different ways.
