met one man who did, and
was $100 and three points
poorer. We chose instead to
stop in Hope for a coffee and
_contemplate the Rambo tour.

was movie madness as 550 locals
went looking for 100 jobs as extras,
and they say only those shorter than
Stallone were hired.

parking, quiet sidewalks, and peo-
ple have the time to stop and chat.
Our hotel, the Royal Anne, has
some fine old-fashioned ideas such
as not charging for underground
parking. It also has golf packages,
and in Kelowna these days golf is
getting the same rave reviews as
Mission Hill’s °92 grand reserve
chardonnay.

There are four reasons for this:
Predator Ridge, Gallagher’s
Canyon, Quail Ridge and Harvest.
The latter two have just opened,
putung the seal on Kelowna as a
superb golf destination and perhaps
the best golfers’ outing within dri-
ving distance of Vancouver. They
are all different, tough if you
choose your tees boldly, but
immensely enjoyable.

Predator Ridge does not have a
dull hole on the course. Gallagher’s
Canyon takes the breath away with
majestic vistas, although it is a
relief when construction work stops
in the evenings.

Quail Ridge is not without the
odd earthmover and whining power
saw, but a neighboring artillery
range could not have spoilt our day
here. This is an exceptional course,
with lush fairways, Ponderosa pines
and lakes the color of the Aegean.

Finally, the Harvest Golf Club,
where the director of golf,Giiles
Dufort, has just moved from
Vancouver. Unlike Quail Ridge,

where work on the clubhouse has
just started, Harvest has a fully
operational plantation-style club-
house that is a model of how to do
it handsomely, functionally and
without breaking the benk.

The course meanders through a
working orchard. There are views
of the lake, Kelowna, and the hazy
hills. It’s quiet, and not only is this
a walker’s course but stepping on
the turf is like treading on a carpet.

This is golf at its best, and until
the end of the season (early
November) the regular $60 green
fee is reduced to $50. Failing that,
come in the spring, around the sec-
ond week of May, when the apple
blossoms will give a heady, fra-
grant aroma.

There’s more than golf around
Kelowna of course, including
wineries keen to have you visit, and
600 restaurants.

Finally, there is a late-night
problem with dopes driving up and
down the main drag in boom cars.
The gendarmes don’t appear to do
anything about it; perhaps it’s a job
for Rambo.
