Self-tanning the safest way to go Layne Christensen STYLE NOTES IT SEEMS a little late in the season to be discussing self- tanners but then the same is true of our great weather. Now that it seems here to stay, we can be fairly confident of seeing more tanned jimbs and fuces around the workplace. The safest way to bronze your body is. of course. with a self-tan- ner. Skin is spared from exposure to damaging UV rays but the trade-off is sometimes — depending on the product and the condition of your skin — a long drying time, streaks, blotches and unnatural color. It may take some experimenting with different brands to find the one that works the best for you but following a few simple tips for application will help along the way. Exfoliate first, recommends Cathy Prefontaine of Estée Lauder. Use a loofah or a body-sloughing cream to remove dead skin cells and rough patches so that the cream goes on smoothly and produces an even finisa. {t makes sense to apply tanning cream after you've towelled off from a bath or shower when pores are open and you're already in the buff. Moisturizer can then be applied, if desired. since tanning creams will overdarken dry spots. Prefontaine, a North Shore resi- dent who trains Estée Lauder’s Vancouver sales stat hl, suggests apply ing self-tanner only to thase areas thatare exposed to the sun during natura tanning. Avoid the soles of feet. between the toes, underarms, the under side of the arm and the palins of seur hands. Whether you go for full-body coverage or prefer to retin sone tanlines is up to you. Either way, undertake this in the nude and in the bathroom because the lotion’s color-producing chemi- cal, dihydroxycatone (DHA). will stain clothes and furniture. Apply the cream using a circular motion to avoid streaks. Start at the feet and work your way up taking mental note as you go of what areas you've covered, Finish with your arms, then be sure to scrub palms with cleanser and a brush to erase any traces of the lotion. When using a spray-on formula such as Clinique’s Body Mist Spray, apply it in the shower to avoid spraying furniture. As for drying time, the technol- ogy is now such that more than one company has been able to cut its product's drying ume in hall. Whereas Estée Lauder’s Self- Action Tanning Spray takes an hour to dry. its new Self-Action SuperTan dries in a remarkable [5 minutes. Your “tan.” produced when DHA reacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, will emerge between two and four hours after application. Several companies offer a sepa- rate self-tanner for the face. ideal for oily and sensitive skin types. Images magazine med eight self-tanners for the face and body and determined that: @ Bain de Soleil Tanning Creme. Elizabeth Arden Spa for the Sun and Vichy Auto-Bronzant de Soin were best for fair skin: @ Chane! Bronzage Automatique. Clarins Cremes Anti-Rides Auto- Bronzante Self Tanning Face Cream were good for olive skin; @ Coppertone Sunless Tanning Lotion worked best for dark skin: @ Lancome Lait Auto-Bronzant gave quick color; and, @ Biotherm Hale Sans Soleil pro- duced lasting color.
