Children’s Hospital Patong smiles back where they belong Don't forget finances while away on holidays From page 33 the CGA. *tAlways make sure you will be able to handle these extra pay- ments comfortably.”’ Because there’s usually a mad tush before you leave, use the fol- lowing checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything, suggested the CGA. Circle the tips that apply to you. And cross them off as com- pleted. * If you plan to travel abroad, to protect yourself against foreign exchange fluctuations consider taking half your needs in Cana- dian funds and half in the foreign currency. For large amounts of foreign exchange, spend a few minutes shopping around by phone. You could find quite a difference in exchange rates. Ask **What is the total cost, in Canadian dollars, to buy (the amount in the foreign currency)?”’ * If you and your spouse share credit cards, take different types. Otherwise, if you both have the same MasterCard account and one person loses his or her card, reporting the loss will also in- validate the other card. * Photocopy (or otherwise list) the credit cards and other impor- tant documents you will be carry- ing. Take one copy and leave another with a reliable friend or business colleague. * Put valuables and other im- portant papers into your safe de- posit box. * List bills that will need to be paid before you return. Write post-dated cheques or otherwise arrange for payment to avoid penalties or loss of insurance coverage, for example. * Discuss with your travel and home insurance agents trip cancellation, possessions and med- ical coverage. Review what you already have under your home policy, and through the provincial hospital/ medical and possibly your employer's extended health plans. If you need additional coverage, shop around for best value. Also ask your home insurance agent if being away will affect your home/possessions coverage. * If you plan te be away for a, long period, see if it would be cheaper to have phone service and cablevision cut off and = recon- nected, rather than continuing to pay the rental. You might also reduce your automobile coverage if the car(s) won't be used. Suspend or redirect newspaper and magazine subscrip- dons. * Check that your will is up to date. Possibly arrange a power of attorney. Make sure somebody knows whom 'o9 contact in case of a crisis, or in case you don’t return. That sounds grim. And many of the preceding suggestions might sound like chores. But you must be realistic. The world of business and personal finance never takes a holiday — even if you do.
