a ‘flamboyant slice
of pop pomposity’

The king of Queen moves inex-
orably from 1975’s mega-popular
Queen release, A Night at the
Opera, to sharing the opera centre
stage with Spanish diva Montserrat
Caballe.

in the past, super groups like the
Who regaled fans with the rock
opera musical form. The recipe
usually includes bloated egos and
recurring musical themes bound
up by a thin thread of narrative.
Shrill Scandinavian ice maidens
Dollie Deluxe brought us the
bizarre Rock vs Opera release in
1986. For his operatic fix, Freddie
went for the straight goods.

Cabaile in Barcelona in 1987. He
played her some songs he had
especially written for her. She lik-

ed what she heard and the result is ”

an album of songs, written and ar-
ranged by Mercury and com-
poser-arranger Mike Moran, and
sung by Mercury and Caballe.

It's a natural partnership. The
bombastic vocal tendencies of
Mercury marry well with Caballe’s
rich aural pyrotechnics. This
cross-over curio is a big-produc-
tion, big-name flamboyant slice of

The Argentinian pianist was
digitally recorded sitting at a
Steinway piano in the Notre-Dame
du Liban church in Paris during
1988.

Running at close to an hour, the
CD version captures a striking per-
formance of Sonata No. 13 Op.
27, No. 1; Sonata No. 14, Op. 27,
No. 2 (Moonlight); and Sonata No.
15, Op. 28 (Pastorale). The release
is part of a series encompassing
the complete output of
Beethover:’s piano sonatas.

Gelber plays from the heart with
fingers caressing and attacking as
the movements demand. A great
recording and a spirit-moving per-
formance.
