The tone is set from the start with a realistic father/daughter talk between Diane (lone Skye — folksinger Donovan's daugh- ter) and James Court (ohn Mahoney). On the way to her graduation, Diane rehearses her valedic- torian speech. She plans to open with a joke, ‘I have glimpsed . the future. My advice is — go back.” Dad thinks it’s great but she’s afraid that her peers won't get it. : She's right. Dad's laugh is the lone response. Diane's fear of the future is unexpected from someone who seems to have it all — looks, brains and a new car from her devoted father.
