First place finishes were chalked up by Andrea Bell in the 200-metre backstroke, Steven Marshall and Jake Russell in the 100-metre and 300-metre butterfly respectively. Many swimmers recorded best times which have gained them en- try into the provincial champion- ships in Victoria from Feb. 16 to Winning times recorded were Jason Chih fourth, Spenser Jay, sixth in boys’ 10- and-under 100- metre butterfly; Caroline Watt, fourth in both the 100-metre and 200-metre butterfly and Steven Roka, third in the 100-metre but- terfly. Alex Howard came second in the 13-14 year girls’ 100-metre Sonya takes NORTH VANCOUVER'S Sonya Jeyaseelan continued her winning ways over the weekend at the Ten- nis B.C. Pacific Northwest Junior Tennis Tournament at the Univer- sity of British Columbia. The local ace defeated Martina Nejedly of Richmond in the finals, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to earn the Under-14 singles title. North Shore player Ramin Pejan of West Vancouver, beat Jake Raiton of the U.S. in the finals, 6-0, 6-2 taking the boys’ Under-12 singles title. Sunday’s event, which attracted 120 players from throughout the Pacific Northwest, was the fourth tournament in Tennis: B.C.’s backstroke and sixth in the 200- metre backstroke Marshall sixth in the 109-metre backstroke; Gina Elliot fifth in the 200-metre but- terfly; Brett Creed sixth in the 200-metre freestvle and 200-metre backstroke. Bell came second in the 50-metre freestyle and Tara McKay finished second in the f00-metre breaststroke, second in the 100- metre butterfly and sixth in the 200-metre butterfly. Canadian Under-14 champion and national team member Steve Deakin of Port Moody continued his transition to the Under-I6 age category, winning his second singles title in the Tennis B.C. tournament. Second-seeded Deakin defeated No.1 seeded Stefano Walker of North Varcouver, 6-2,6-4 in the finals. Lenks Hurton of North Van- couver was defeated by Ssxsha Mattu of White Rock, 6-1, 6-1 in the girls’ Under-12 category.
