By RAY TICKSON Contributing Writer “It used to be a beautiful road, “but now it’s a shambles — full of holes and grooves from sloppy paving,”’ says Pau! Lightfoot of Russell Avenue. Lightfoot blames the poor con- dition of the road on contractors who, he says, keep digging it up, and then filling it in as cheaply as Lightfoot says contractors should have to replace the road to the standards they found it in be- fore they dug it up: ‘Taxpayers paid good money for that road and the contractors should put it back the way it was."’ North Vancouver District engineer John Bremner said that patches are never as good as origi- nal pavement, but there is no problem cciving on them. Bremner said contractors who make cuts and holes in the pave- ment are required to repair the road to a ‘‘decent condition.”’ But he said there are no hazards to drivers. The district has applied to the Department of Highways for shared-cost funding to upgrade the section of the parkway from Tolcross Road to Apex Avenue to the same level as the new section from the Seymour River. ‘‘le will have sidewalks, curbing, a land- scap~4 centre divider and new eat vote © of = Mae Ga 11 - Sunday, April 9, 1989 - North Shore News $1.3 MILLION IN FUNDS NEEDED Province to share upgrade costs of Parkway pavement," Bremner explained. The parkway is considered a secondary provincial highway so portions of its upkeep and capital construction come under provin- cial government cost-sharing pro- grams, Bremner said. Costs of the upgrading are estimated to be $1.3 million. The province is being asked to con- iribute $390,000 as its share. Bremner said if the district is successful in getting funding, the work can be done this year. “Next year we will apply for the section from Apex to Indian River Drive.” He said the district has to apply for ‘bite-size pieces’’ if it hopes to be successful in getting provincial funding. rive got fi!)
