To get there the traveller walks a
short distance in the direction of
Harry's Bar and looks for the private
dock of the Hotel Cipriani. If the
launch is not there a private
telephone will summon it within five
minutes.

Behind is the beauty and madness
of Venice, in front is the best and the
most expensive hotel in Italy, where
aroom with breakfast starts at $400

and closes November to March 15.

The Cipriani (pronounced ‘‘cheep-
ree-an-y*') was built by the founder
of Harry’s Bar and the Guinness
brewing family to deliver a country-
house atmosphere and simple but ex-
cellent cooking.

Now owned by Venice Simplon
Orient-Express, it is run by manag-
ing director Natale Rusconi.

architect Gerard Gallet has given
each a private patio sheltered by at-
tractive hedges of hibiscus and
laurel, Bamboo and rattan give the
suites an exotic informality without
subtracting from the sumptuous lux-
uries. Bathrooms are huge, all mar-
ble and glass, with double Jacuzzi
tubs. Skylights and blinds on the
sloping ceiling are controlled by but-
tons, and at the flick of another
switch a TV pops magically out of
a marble and glass table. Videos are

available, with Casablanca the hot
favorite.

The rate is $1,000 4 night, but that
includes free videos.

Much of the life of the Cipriani is
around the heated salt water pool,
the only one in Venice. The hotel
also has the only tennis court, and
{5 minutes away by water taxi is a
golf course,

At the Cipriani, guests get Mawless
service, sercnity and sheer style. Staff
use scissors to cut the grass round the
