IP Vresey, January 22, 1988 - North Shore News NO ONE was hurt when this car driven by Kelly Renix skidded on to its side near the International Plaza recently, The police and firemen at the scene said the rainy weather had resulted in a busy night for acci- dents, chef to teach NOW THAT winter has sunk its cold, wet claws into the North Shore, it's time for a little sweet relicf. To that end, Rec Centre Lons- dale will present pastry chef Werner Schmidt for three creative culinary workshops. All three will run on Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sen- sational Starters on Jan. 24 will provide students with the oppor- tunity to learn about puff pastry and how to prepare unique and delicious appetizers. Schmidt will present Sugar Pull- ing on Feb. 7 and Sugar Blowing on March 27. Sugar Pulling will be taught as a technique for making baskets, ribbons and flowers for Valentine’s Day. Sugar Blowing is an art similar to glass blowing in which the artist can create beautiful figurines like eggs and bunnies for Easter. Schmidt is classically trained as a pastry chef in his native Ger- many where he went to school and apprenticed in Essen before going on to work in Switzerland. Since coming to Canada in 1960, he has worked at the Dutch Bakery, the Hotel Vancouver, the Holiday Inn, the Bayshore and on the Van- couver-to-Alaska cruise ship run. Schmidt’s teaching credits in- clude demonstrations on CBC’s Wok With Yan, the baker’s club, department store and local televi- sion demonstrations, and workshops with the North Van- couver Recreation Commission for five years. Says Schmidt, ‘‘Besides the demonstration and the recipe, people will get a taste of what I make, an example to bring home and a few laughs along the way.”’ Anyone interested in the workshops should register im- mediately by phone at 987-PLAY or in person at any North Van- couver Recreation Commission fa- cility. hee Oh NEWS photo Cindy Bellamy (HEE INTRODUCTORY OFFER! 50% OF NicCALLS KNITTING THREAD SPECIALS!
