46 ~ Wednesday, July 30, 1986 - North Shore News USE YOUR EYES TO RELAX Yearly eye examinations stressed MANY PEOPLE do not know how to use their eyes to relax, says the Canadian Opiometric Associa- tion. Few realize good vision is as im- portant to recreation as it is to work, The reader who gets tired after a few chapters, the television viewer who sits up close, the cool player who consistently misses the corner pocket, may all have vision pro- blems in need of care. They may perhaps be wearing prescription lenses that are perfect on the job but not for enjoying a particular hobby. Changes in vision are often so subtle that people are not aware they are not sceing as well as they could. So they put aside the book, needlework or stamp collection when they feel a headache coming on or they give up tennis or a musical instrument because, for some reason, they ‘just don’t feel up to it.” A thorough eye examination every year is a good way to keep vision up to par for recreation as well as work. The examination should cover eye health, common vision pro- blems and vision skills. A’ 10- minute examination covering near and far vision is too superficial, the association says. People should discuss hobbies and recreational activities with the optometrist, to determine if lenses prescribed for on-the-job seeing tasks will also meet recreational needs. Sometimes they will not. Those who play musical instru- ments, for example, may have dif- ficulty using their bifocals to read music on a stand. Instead of using odd head or body positions to see the music, they could switch to a trifocal lens, which has a prescription for in- termediate seeing ranges. Trifocals may also be the answer for artists working with a canvas on an ezsel. Sometimes a different type of lens correction is what is needed. Avid) photographers may prefer contact lenses rather than glasses because they can get their eye and lens prescription right up to the viewfinder. Half-glasses may be the choice for people who need glasses only for near viewing , and like to talk or watch teievision while sewing or doing other close work. For others, an adjustment of the environment is all that is neces- sary. An older person, for exam- ple, may be able to see better for reading or other close work simply by moving a lamp closer. EYE SAFETY Eye safety equipment is a must for those who engage in eye- hazardous hobbies, such as wood- working or gardening. Inexpensive plastic safety goggles sold at hardware and hobby shops will suffice for most people. Sunglasses that screen out 75 to v, 90 per cent of light are needed for outdoor daytime wear. The association recommends a medium or dark gray tint because it does not interfere with color perception. Sunglasses with maximum pro- tection against ultraviolet radiation are recommended for persons who have had cataract surgery, spend most of their day cutdoors or near snow or sand, live in high altitude areas, and for those who use sunlamps. Consumers can get more advice about gearing their vision to their hobbies from their optometrist, the association says.
