There are two things you can do to prevent that from happening. If you have a trademark, you can register it with the Registrar of Trade Marks office in Ottawa. It will cost you $150 to register your word, symbol or picture for a 15-year period. Registra- tion can then be renewed. The owner of a registered trademark has the exclusive right to its use in Canada. That owner can also sell the trademark, or licence others to use it. It will be up to you to make sure no other business is using your registered trademark in Canada, and to take legal action if this hap- pens.
