Talking to Jacques and
Bromfield in Bromfield’s
West Vancouver home it’s
easy to get caught up in the
vitality and enthusiasm of an
electric partnership sure of
its abilities, confident of its
future.

Their initial foray into
breeding a truly local Van-
couver film industry is their
Hart Production 1980s Ca-
nadian western, ‘‘Hartbreak
Motel’’.

Plot for the feature length
film flows from the slightly
off-balance pen of Brom-
field, whose comedic renown
has been established with
such cult classics as ‘“‘Love
At First Sight”.

The new film, which will
be directed by Bromfield and
produced’ by Jacques, is
unique not. because its
heroes’ twin. 80-year-old
bodies creak rather than
gleam and not because its
female lead is an ex-roller
derby queen and one-time

its with them.””

Bromfield and Jacques
have therefore taken up the
challenge of establishing
Vancouver as more than just
a technical suburb of
Hollywood. The idea is to
machete a path to a Van-
couver cottage film industry
through the existing under-
brush using the deft strokes
of a precision calculator and
humorously pointed pen.

Bromfield, after years of
comedy writing and directing
in, both Canada and the
United States, is wise to the
ways of Hollywood and the
cloying minions who clog the
