THE PROSPECT of trading the hot concrete of
lower Lonsdale for the cool glacial slopes of Mt.
Garibaldi has proven tempting to North Van-
couver youth — so tempting, in fact, that a sum-
mer camping program conducted through the

Queen Mary Community School

Association

managed to double its attendance this year.

Coordinator Kelly Martin-
son said the program at-
tracted 148 youths between
the ages of seven and 20
years, compared to the 1983
total of 60 youths. The pro-
gram consisted of 27 excur-
sions, ranging from day trips
to week-long trips.

Each group usually con-
sisted of six youths and at
least two leaders.

Financing for the program
was provided, in part, by the
School Association, the fed-
eral employment grant fund,
the B.C. Management and
Housing Corporation, and
individual trip participants.

The Vancouver Founda-
tion and the Kiwanis Foun-
dation have also served as

The 27 trips were not only
to the Mt. Garibaldi region,
but to Deeks Lake, Diamond
Head, Black Tusk and the
Bowron Lakes. Advertised
through distributed pam-
phiets and through word of
mouth, Martinson said the
trips were, in some cases, the
first me many local youths
had ever gone camping
