B4 - Wednesday, October 10, 1984 - North Shore News GE entertainment New theatre features local talent RICHMOND'S brand new Gateway Theatre is hoping to develop an audience not only trom the surrounding com- munity but from all over the Lower Mainland; and the newly-formed Actors’ Guild production of ‘Conduct Unbecoming’ — the theatre’s first full length dramatic presentation — will provide some indication of its ability to do so. ‘Conduct Unbecoming’ runs until! October 20, with no performance on October 1S. Curtain is 8 p.m. ‘Conduct Unbecoming’ 1s undoubtedly a crowd pleaser. An engrossing drama about malitary life in British India, i ran successfully in Lon- don’s West End for nearly two. years, and was later made into a compelling film starring Michael York, Christopher Plummer, Richard Attenborough and Susannah York. The Actors’ Guild version is directed by Mary-Lou Mc- Causiand, whose direction of a previous Presentation House production of this play won Theatre B.C.’s best play award in Kamloops in 1982. The play 1s based on an ac- tual incident. An individual sense of honor puts a proud regiment’s tradition and reputation in question when Drake, an officer new to the regiment, 1s detailed to de- fend a fellow officer at a subalterns court martial. The end result is a visually color- ful play that engages both in- tellectually and emotionally. Also featured are Mark Gash as Millington , the of- ficer on trial, and Derek Green as Fothergill, the Senior Subaltern. Both Gash and Green are North Vancouver residents who have trained at the Amercan Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena, California and appeared in several West Vancouver Little Theatre productions including Tribute, the Unknown Soldier and His Wife and Ring Round the Moon. Gash shared best actor award in this year’s Theatre B.C. North Shore zone festival in the double role of Hugo and Frederick in Ring Round the Moon.
