A8 - Wednesday, August 1, 1984 - North Shore News The ridiculous Olympics HEY ARE now holding the non-existent Olympics, | am told. And | say ‘‘l am toid”’ because here’s one guy who hasn't been wat- ching. There are better ways of wasting my time. Like writing about them. The Olympics are dead, and have been ever since the Palestine Liberation Organization got the Gold Medal for Terrorism in 1972 for slaughtering a dozen Israel athletes. Come to think of it, though, a more, accurate date for the demyse would be 1964, when the South Africans were drumm- ed out for not being nice enough. Never mind that the Rus- sians make South Africa look like a kindergarten, or that it has some great athletes who don’t depend on anabolic steroids, growth hormones, and other Frankenstein ef- fects. Never mind, either, that the Idi Amins and other gangsters of Black Africa have always been welcome. The International Olympic Committee knows who the bad guys are. The Olympics have become so ridiculous that it's) a wonder anyone takes any notice of them. And I'm not talking only about the American boycott in 1980 and the Russian counter- thrust this year. We've now advanced so. far that it Mother USSR gets into a sulk, her satellite states say they won't play either. It as to laugh, really, when Mongoha, Atghanistan, etc., Misha the Bear's get this ht tollow in stral Doug Collins ee footsteps, claiming that they are democratic nations acting tor the greater pood = ot mankind Everyone seems to have forgotten that Ancient Gireece stopped its wars tor two weeks in honor of the games The whole thing makes my old friend Adol! Hitler look like a liberal. After all, he never brought out the SS when Jesse Owens rained on his parade in 1936. Nor did he declare the games ultra vires when he knew a big squad of American blacks was heading his way. In those days, It was assumed, even by Adolf, Musso and other bad characters, that the event was above politics. Compare that with the idiocies of the past decade or so. In 1976, Black Africa boycotted the Olympics because 1t was miffed with the Kiwis, whose great of- fence was that they had dared to send a rugger team to South Africa. The Kiwis, God bless Bob Muldoon, didn’t buckle. ‘“‘We don't give our athletes instructions about whom they should play and whom they should not play.’ they said, ‘and if you don't like 10 you can go and get stuffed."" Today, with a Labor government in power, they would probably sur- render even betore being ask- ed to Almost the same thing happened in the so-called Commonwealth Games of 1978, which they should have called the Dead-End Games, not because they were held in Edmonton but because the Commonwealth is nothing but a myth anyway, and an apology tor a once-great Em- pire. The thug who was runn- ing Nigeria at the time, a guy known as The Gun, on ac- count of his taking his enemies down to the beach on Friday nights and knock- ing them ofi, was especially loud in his complaints. Final- fy, though, all! those democrats decided to stay in, they wanting more foreign aid dough out of us. Not that Canada can claim any superiority tn these mat- ters. Remember how that sil- ly ass Trudeau turned back trom an international ploughing contest in Ontario when he heard a couple of South Afrecans were com- peting? And if | remember correctly, we wouldn't even allow cripples from Rhodesia to attend the Handicapped Olympics Yes, Pierre Marvellous discriminated against cripples. Down in Los Angeles, where McDonalds have paid tor the McPool for the McSwimming and McDiving contests, they go on preten- ding that the Olympics are real.
