Hydro payments Brian Tipper, who lives at 2151 Capilano Road, made sure B.C. Hydro was at the top of his list of creditors when his downtown nightclub began to seriously flounder and they sent him notices of disconnection. But the cheques he sent them still didn’t prevent him from getting his power shut off. Last week Tipper was in the dark, wondering where he had gone wrong. And Hydro came up with the answer - he kept sending them money to reduce the debt instead of offering them an explanation. Even when Tipper called the Hydro office at Haynes Avenue in North Vancouver Wednesday - the day his power was cut off - and guaranteed he could pay the outstanding $200 by Friday it sul wasn't good enough. “I phoned everybody,” he said, “and they said ‘tough luck, go and borrow it from someone’.” Tipper jointly runs the Saddle Tramps cabaret on Pender Street in downtown O ‘By CHRIS LLOYD Vancouver and he and his partner are desperately try- ing to breathe new life into the place. “There is no creditor on my list who is not cooperating,” he says - ex- cept Hydro. A couple of weeks ago he arranged a sale of some of the cabaret furniture and was to received the cheque by last Friday. However, that wasn’t good enough for Hydro. They cut him off Wednesday. He acknowledges he'd received warning notices - but says he'd countered them by sending payments. When he recieved the first notice of disconnection April 26 he owed $516. On May 2 he dropped off a $100 cheque. May 3 he was sent another disconnection notice. He sent another che- que for $224, on May 16. May 17, with approximately _ $200 still to pay, he received another disconnection QAQAGGGAaAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaa THE COVESIDE notice. Last Wednesday - two days before he would have sent his final payment - Hydro lived up to their threats and pulled the plug on him. B.C. Hydro Press Officer Peter Fricker told the News: “If he had bothered to con- tact us at any time he was in arrears it was possible we could have worked out some arrangements but we receiv- ed no communication until today (Wednesday), when he was disconnected. “Instead, he just put in pieces of payment. Instead of just slipping cheques into our mailbox he should have answered the notice he received and we might have been able to do something for him.” Fricker explained: “Hydro works the same way as any other organization. If we are not paid we cannot provide the service.” So now he had undertaken to pay the $200 balance by Friday would he be recon- nected? “I was told the only way he would get reconnected ts to pay his bill in full.” said Fricker, adding “There may be a service charge for reconnection.” been given permission to land in Norseman Park at the end of the month by North helicopters on etther May 30 or May 31 to film a concert by the folk singer Valdy at used to film Valdy’s arnval and departure, City Vancouver City council. the North Vancouver BCTV applied for Engineer Alan Phillips said Centennial Theatre per- In a report. ...
