Pictured left to right are Chief of Staff Dr. Werner Pankratz, Board Chairman Ken Bruce and Administrator John Borthwick. (Ellsworth Dickson photo) LGH ‘bleeding to death’ FROM PAGE A1 | Hospital Administrator John Borthwick told the News: “Our problem is we are bleeding to death. “We are spending a little over $10,000 a day more than we are taking in so if we don't lay off'some of our staff very rapidly we are going to have to lay off even more people to get to a break even point.” Borthwick said he felt angry about the short time in which the hospital had been given to respond to the government's order for budget cuts. “It is very short but if we wait it just makes it worse.” Like hospital board chairman Bruce, Borthwick questions the rationale of the government slashing health care. “We are not like Mac-. Millan Bloedel, our sales aren't down. There are just the same, if not more people knocking on our door to come in. I know as the SPECIAL waiting list gets longer everyone is going to get angrier, waiting for surgery to alleviate their pain.” The closure of 55 beds throughout the hospital will cut the total number of beds available to 401, which the 200 physicians using the hospital describe as “totally unacceptable”. Full effects of the staff layoffs will not be felt until June. Staff cuts will be made throughout the hospital and, complying with union practice, it will be the most recently hired who = are chopped. Borthwick says he fears the bitterness of the moves will be reflected by staff on the job. “You can't have this kind of major unheaval without ill feeling.” Even so, Bruce promises the community: “But with al! this we wish to assure patients that once they are in hospital their care will not be compromised in any way. We will continue to maintain the highest possible standards in Lions Gate Hospital.” 6HR BLANK CASSETTES $16.89 14 CASSETTE HOLDERS $25 99 WHI £ QUANTITIES LAST NORTH SHORE VIDEO HUT 1061 Marine Or., North Vancouver Tet: 984-0900 °e e e ° e ° e ° e ad e @ Video Recorders $ 00 e e@ as low as ... e e Video Movies ° @ Choose From: French Lt.'’s Woman, Time Bandits, Mir » @ ‘or Crack'd, Scanners, Halloween Il, Atlantic City, Lov: e e ing Couples, and many more — also available adult movies eo ad ° ad e e e ad e bd @ bad e 19th Anniversary Sale Everything In The Store At © OAKRIDGE 296 641) % Towels, Rugs and Wall mounted Accessortes PAM HOY AL GPO SN12¢e The Cut The SUPERCUT follows the flow of the hair and is cut exactly as the hair naturally falls.
