SEMINAR TO PROVIDE TIPS Hard time hints for keeping your money The recent federal budget has had a serious impact on the savings and investment plans of many Canadians. To explain the effects of the new income. tax legislation and to outline the basic elements of a suc- cessful savings and _ in- vestment program, Investors Syndicate Limited will be holding here a no-charge Personal Financial Planning seminar, at the International Plaza Hotel, starting at 7 p.m., on Monday, April 19. Persons interested in registering for the seminar may obtain further in- formation from the New Westminster region office of Investors. The telephone number is 526-3725. Seymour Kelly and Len Compton of Investors, said in announcing the seminar that it has been designed to provide helpful advice on how people can cope with inflaton and income tax changes. “The seminar will explain, in easily understood terms, what people can do to reduce their taxes,” Kelly said. “As well, we will be explaining ways to increase your income through ef- fective personal financial planning. He said the essential first step is for an individual to make a thorough personal financial review. “Once you know where you are at, you then must determine your specific investment or savings ob- jective,” he said. “After that is done, the individual has to establish a personal financial program. It has to be hand- tailored to suit the particular needs of the individual or family.” Compton said the seminar Program will include material which deals with the best approach to take to achieve a flexible and rewarding personal money management plan. “The only worthwhile method of attaining financial independence is to get balance,” he said. “Firstly, you should always have a_ short-term reserve such as a reasonable amount of money in your bank account for current expenses and for emergencies. Secondly, you should have income protection. Ideally that should consist of term life insurance and disability insurance. Thirdly, you should have some guaranteed assets. These should be investments that produce a specific amount of money in a set number of years.” Finally, the wise moncy manager has equity in- vestments. That is to say, money soundly invested in a selected and diversified list of common stocks. People Making a comeback FROM PAGE C2 enjoy the experience the last time you binged, or were you merely eating compul- sively, in to an inner drive you did not understand enough to control? Yet, when you think about it, who “deserves” to be slim more than the once- overweight individual who has struggled and sacrificed to rid himself of his un- wanted fat? Does the person who has been thin all his life, who has taken it for granted and never really worked at it, somehow merit his trim body more than the rest of us? Of course not! Now, assess the damage. It’s doubtful you have com- pletely undermined your efforts after just one binge, however defeated you may feel now. A few pounds can be lost again in a short time, and you'll again be making progress toward your goal. Even if you have re-gained all the weight and (heaven forbid!) gained even more, it still makes no sense to merely mourn your lost efforts, or continue over- eating and make matters © even worse. The sooner you get back on track again, the sooner you'll feel better about yourself and your situation. Yes, you can begin again after a discouraging setback in weight loss, as many successful losers can tell you. Very few dieters make steady progress toward goal without an occasional setback; it's the ones that are determined to make it work despite all discouragements who eventually succeed. Put that knowledge to good use and soon you, too, will be one of the “happy losers!” Now you know The world’s largest stadium The Strahov Stadium in Prague, Czechoslovakia — can readi- ly hold up to 240,000 spec- tators for some events.
