Consumer Affairs Minister Jim Nielsen said Thursday the company had rejected suggestions by the govern- ment that the defective percolators should be replaced with another of their own brands, the Pyrex model. Although the government had not been able to per- suade the company to change its mind, no legal action was contemplated because no consumer laws had been broken, he said. Neilsen said discussions had been held with Corning, following widespread complaints that the per- colaters were defective and potentially dangerous, to see if the company would consider improving its recent cash-refund offer to customers. Corning issued a warning to purchasers of coffee percolators that they were potentially hazardous. The metal top may separate from the ceramic bowl due to a weakening of the epoxy sealant, the company warned. The company asked purchasers not to use the pots and offered cash refunds from $5 to $20 on all range-top pots and from $5 to $30 on electric per- colators manufactured since 1972. Owners of earlier models were given the opportunity to purchase other products at discount prices. “We felt the company should consider replacing the defective coffee pots with Pyrex coffee pots which they also manufactured,” Nielsen said. “But we were informed that these are no longer being produced. “The company’s position is that they consider their present offer to be eminently fair and the, are unable to make further concessions,” he said. Nielsen said been “several complaints there had hundred” from B.C.
