Dutch Amaryllis tops the list
for some easy winter blooms

IT’S HARD to imagine a move
spectacular flower than the Dutch
Amaryllis (properly known as
Hippeastrum).

Each huge bulb prcduces an
equally enormous flower = stalk
topped off with long-lasting, fun-
nel-shaped flowers, each the size of
a child’s head. Although red and
orange-red colors predominate,
there are also Amaryllis in
beautiful pinks, whites and salm-
ons, as weil as bicolors.

The new Picotees, for example,

are solid colors with only a narrow
edge of a contrasting shade.

Amaryllis bulbs are available
from now until February. Choose
the largest possible bulbs; they will
produce more and larger flowers,
size 26 being the smallest which
produces good results. Healthy
bulbs will be firm and have thick
roots and will bloom within only a
few weeks of planting.

indoor culture. No cool
temperatures or special conditions
are required.

Just pot them up in ordinary
house plant soil in a container
slightly larger than the bulb, leav-
ing its neck above the soil level.
Then, water well and place the
bulb on a bright windowsill, water-
ing again only when the soil ap-
pears dry. As growth and flower-
ing begin, water more often.

The flower stem usually emerges
before the leaves and normally
bears four flowers. Larger bulbs
often produce more than one
flowering stem for a longer season
of bloom.

While the plant is in bloom,
give it cooler temperatures if
possible, as this extends the
flowering season. After blooming
ceases, remove the faded flowers
and give the bulb regular house
plant care, including a regular fer-
tilizer program.

The bulb will soon recover from
its efforts and, after a short dor-
mant period in the fall, will be
ready for next winter’s bloom.
