The girl guide program en- courages participants to look for opportunities to give service whenever and wherever possible — from the Brownie taking tray favors to a senior’s home to the 16-year-old Ranger helping with Operation Wheelchair. The girls in Lions Area, which covers the North Shore and as far north as Pemberton, and on the Sunshine Coast to Madeira Park, often help with the Mother's March, Heart Fund and Cystic Fibrosis campaigns. They have also been involved in pledge drives with Timmy’s Telethon and Chan- nel 9 public broadcasting and in volunteering at Expo. During the pre-Christmas season West Vancouver girls helped the West Van Cancer Fund sell holly in Park Royal. Another group took on the annual challenge of providing 700 Christmas crackers for food boxes. Numerous units visit seniors on a year-round basis, and at the festive season go caroling and take small gifts. Adopt-a-Family has attracted the attention of about 25 groups. eee REN SMO ERPS HS Can en NN Natta mb He UME Ae OA EEO ECON ATC LEORncm SEN ccna cattle Delt VA AAR Mla N 6 torte the taeennNe These groups raise money for this project through such events as craft fairs, bake sales and bottle drives. Collecting cash receipts all year to be turned into turkeys for the hampers is another way. One Pathfinder group earned the funds needed for the hampers, gifts and Christmas dinner for their adopted family by selling Carol-o-Grams. People supporting this endeavor purchased a carol to b2 sung to a friend or relative. Another West Vancouver unit of girls is helping out the Vancouver Aquarium. Part of the proceeds from a craft fair they sponsored are going to buy a Flashlight fish. Proceeds from this fair are also be- ing donated to the Man in Motion Tour. Through guiding, girls are ex- posed to the values of volunteering in their communities. So as not to confuse the public as to who is benefiting from these fund raisers, the girls do not wear their uniforms when assisting other community organizations. For this reason the guides’ commitment of time and effort is not always ob- vious. So, chances are that girl you see volunteering at a fund-raising event may be a Brownie, a Guide, a Pathfinder, a Ranger or a Cadet. And she will be saying Merry Christmas all year long.
