The R&A does not own
the Old Course — a popular
misconception by many visi-
tors.

The linksland of St.
Andrews belongs to the peo-
ple of the ancient city and
the courses were adminis-
tered for many centuries by
the Town Council.

With the abolition of the
St. Andrews town council in

1974 a new Parliamentary
Act created the St. Andrews
Links Trust, an independent
body charged with the run-
ning and protection of the
courses. The 1974. act
extended the long. partner-

ship between the tocal .
authority and the R&A who -
share nomination rights to.
