[was reminded of that last week when T rook my daugh- ter, Jillian, to che Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for her driver's test. Jill is my second child to drive. She’s been raking the defensive driving course for three months and she’s had a ton of dri- ving experience so she’s quite confident. Not so, her mother. The prospect of her driving herself around without me bark- ing instructions at her makes me very nervous. And speaking of ner- vous, the morning of her test, she was very nervous. For once, I didn’t have any trouble getting her out of bed. She was up and ordering the rest of us 2round in plenty of time. Her older brother, who decided to accompany us to the DMYV, was considerably less enthusiastic about getting there. He dragged his feet around the kitchen, labouring over which box of cereal to leave empty on the counter. He struggled to get his socks and shoes on. He brushed his teeth for a full 10 minutes, and then, just as we were guing out the door, declared that he needed to shave. The stalling was unbearable for Jill. “Adam, get a move on!” she hounded him. “You’re torally stressing me out. I need to be there 15 minutes early to practise my parallel parking.” He heaved a huge sigh, and reluctantly followed us out the door. Of course his lack of enthusiasm might have had some- “ thing to do with why he was coming with us in the first place. No, it wasn’t that he wanted to share his little sister's great day, In fact, he was coming to the DMV with us to surrender his own driver’s licence, which he’s had fer just a year and which was suspended a week ago. Too manv tickets. None for speeding, he assures me. Just minor offenses, like not having the ‘N’ displayed on his truck, not wearing a seat belt, not stopping at a stop sign . . . “You have no idea how bruta! the police are these days with kids who drive,” he says as we pull up in front the DMV. I hope his litede sister is paying attention.
