marking sheet that is consistent
from garden to garden.
“One of the first things they took
for is year-round interest, a lot of
people don’t rvalize thar.”

That means the judges look for
elements thar will combine to
create a beautifid parden even in
the middle of winter, things Eke
bark texture and colour and

The judges also look at the
general structure and form of the
garden, Then they get doen to
the details.

“They look at fences, at
furniture... sometimes there's
too much detail, that is, the
garden is cluttered, So there can
be simplicity in detail.”

Then they yo on to look ar the
colours and textures of the plant
material and determine if they
complement cach other or clash.

‘They took atthe — hard
landscaping — the walkways
and retaining walls, and they
mark the garden based on its
fevel of maintenance.
“For a garden contest like this we
look for excellence. for anything
less than that we take marks off.”
Finally, if there’s a view, the
judges look to sce thai the garden
planner took full advantage of it.
You'd be surprised. Sometimes
people rum their furniture away
from the view, or they pui up
fences thar block it.”
Nominations for the garden
contest are open until July 19 and
forms are available at North
Shore Garden, Centres.
